Capturing the Spirit of Childhood: One proud momma!

Just thought I'd share my day. I woke up this morning with quite possibly the worst migraine I've ever had. For those of you who suffer with migraines you know how completely debilitating they can be. The slightest motion, noise, exposure to light is excruciating. Sadly, like me, my oldest son has had migraines since Kindergarten so he knows exactly the way I feel when I have one. I managed to get upstairs to wake him for school (that in itself was a huge hurdle). I told him I wasn't feeling well and that I needed him to get ready for school on his own today. He took his shower, fixed himself breakfast and got himself all ready to go and was quiet as a mouse the whole time. Now, I'm sure your saying, "He's 11, he should be able to get himself ready." He does get himself ready, but normally with some pushing and prodding from me. What touched me so was what he did next. When it was getting close to the time he needed to leave he asked me if I wanted him to wake his younger brother so he could get ready for school too. I said, "that would be great buddy, thank you." While Kyle was brushing his teeth, Ryan got clothes for him to wear (including socks and shoes) and set them out for him to wear. I heard him tell him, "Kyle you need to be extra quiet because mom has a bad headache." Before Ryan left to catch his bus I heard him say to Kyle, "Love you Kyle, have a great day at school." Wow! Those 2 fight most of the time when they are together, but I know Ryan was thinking, "This is what my mom does everday so I should do the same."

So now it was Kyle's turn to start the day without me. He got ready, quiet as could be. He picked up the phone and called his dad at work and I hear him say, "Dad, mom is sick and I can't find my glasses." "Do you know where they are?" He didn't want to bother me so he called his dad at work. He came over once and asked how I was doing and I asked him if he had everything ready to get on the bus. He said, "yes, but I can't pack my lunch because I can't find any ziploc bags." Then he said, "but don't worry mom, I'll just eat whatever they are having today, even if I don't like it." Kyle is the pickiest eater on the planet and I can count of one hand the food he WILL eat. For him to say this was about the sweetest thing ever. I looked at him and he started tearing up and I said, "what's the matter sweetie?" He said, "I just am sad that you are sick." Gosh I love my kids.

When Ryan got home the first thing he said, "Are you feeling better mom?" At this point I was doing much better. Then Kyle came home and gave me the biggest hug and said, "Mom, that was probably the worst morning of my life!" I said, "Why is that buddy?" He said, " I missed you!, I missed you talking to me before school, I missed the sounds you make in the kitchen while making me breakfast, I just missed you!" Although I had the worst migraine ever, my heart grew 10 fold today. So if you ever think that the little things you do everyday for your kids really don't matter, they do. My son missed the sound of me preparing breakfast in the kitchen, something I never imagined he even noticed.
